Córdoba’s rural land is famous for its dry white wines, similar to that of sherry, local honey and olive oil; vineyards and olive groves being a characteristic feature of the landscape, especially south of Cordoba. The area offers visitors a full mixed of cuisines from Roman, Arab, Jewish and Christian infused with Andalucian, Mediterranean styles. The use of local produce and local gastronomy choices such as game, olive oil and honey that boast of the provinces prosperities. If this were anywhere else in the world the depth of history Cordoba holds would be confusing, yet cordobeses embrace every part of it. Traditional handmade products made from iron, vegetable fibres, leather and ceramics are also produced and available in the local street markets. You’re free to wander the markets and take it all in around you. Whether you are arriving or leaving Cordoba you’re bound to see the magnificent Roman Bridge; it is close to the great Mosque and leads to Torre de Calahorra at south end. This monumental bridge crosses the Guadalquivir River, and although you are unable to drive your WildCampers van over it; we highly recommend visitors to consider parking on the south side and walking over the Roman Bridge, passing Bridge Gate and entering the old town to the back of the Mezquita. The bridge is currently popular due to the TV series Game of Thrones, which uses the setting in it episodes.

Today the Mezquita de Cordoba (Cordoba Mosque) as it is commonly known (or the Cordoba Cathedral) can be visited throughout the year for a fee. However there is no charge for the Patio de Los Naranjos which is a large outer courtyard where you can visit to view the with its orange, palm and cypress trees and fountains, which forms the entrance to the Mezquita. Its interior is a juxtaposition forest of columns and arches mirroring the courtyard, wherein the exceptional and admirable Mihrab, showcasing inscriptions of the Koran in gold and rich mosaics, represents the focal point of the building. It is commonly believed that the site of the Mosque-Cathedral was originally a Christian church, which was divided and shared, by Muslims and Christians. Structurally speaking it was a revolutionary building for its time, the structure is regarded as one of the most ingenious monuments of Moorish architecture. Built during the period of Moorish occupation, it is the most splendid Islamic monument in the western world.

Be sure to take the short walk to this quaint cobbled street of Callejon de las flores, the most photographed street in Cordoba, and it’s not hard to see why. Between the pristine whitewashed houses, its balconies and walls are well maintained with a beautiful array of geraniums. At the end of the alleyway you get a picture perfect view of the Mezquita tower framed by the flower and foliage covered walls. Vivid hues of yellows, reds and pinks make this postcard perfect and a delight to see.

Keep walking and a short walk from the Mezquita is both the old (Baños del Alcázar Califal) and new (Baños Arabes de Cordoba) baths. If you’re looking for a bit more history why not visit the ruins of the old baths where you can begin to see what it was like within the era. If you’ve had enough of learning some history and just looking to relax the body and switch off your mind the new baths are for you. Completely immerse yourself in a journey with centuries of culture and tradition which ever you chose.
